Inventor to Revit – ‘Give Me That Chair’

So I briefly outlined the workflow in my last blog to define exactly how we would bring an Inventor model into Revit using the BIM workflow.

Let’s get into the nitty gritty of it.

Once you have created your part (look at this nice chair)

You can then activate the BIM tab to see what options we have available to us.

We have BIM Ready Content and Simplify.

Check Revit Features – this does a quick analysis on the part and will tell us whether any of these features will be able to go into Revit immediately without too much hassle.

As you can see we are going to have some issues with this. It does not like fillets.

So to simplify it we can use 1 of 3 options.

  1. Remove Details – This simplifies the model by removing fillet, chamfers or custom selected faces.
  2. Fill Voids – This caps any holes and pockets with surface patches to fill model voids.
  3. Define Envelopes – Simplifies the model with simple box/cylinder extrusions.

After running the feature check report it is still giving me errors but I am going to run the rocognise revit features anyway as I know this should work.

I am going to use the Auto Recognize feature. This will recognize all features that are compatible with Revit as well as deleting any fillets or chamfers.

I hit the finish recognize button and go onto the next step. BIM Exchange.

Here you have some more tools that will tell Revit what type of component you are exporting.

For your MEP author it is important as you would like the correct connection when using this Inventor assembly or part in Revit.

Your UCS helps the Inventor model to be the right way up in Revit.

Check Revit Features

Now we can head off and export the model to Revit. Click on the Export the Building components.

File Type – You can select either .rfa or .adsk

Component Type – You can select what type of classification you want for this component.

I will choose a chair.

You can also export the properties from Inventor into Revit.

Okay after all that lets export the file.

Below you can see the Translation Report. Everything is a success and at the bottom you can see what parameters have been exported successfully as well.
