The significance of this 3D PDF exporter is Revit users can now sent normal PDF file to their customers with the advantage that your customer can rotate and section the 3D model amongst other features using the normal Adobe Reader 11.

To illustrate the process of exporting a model to 3D PDF I have opened the demo Revit model. Go to the Add-Ins ribbon Tab where you will find the SimLab 3D PDF exporter. A good idea is to firstly go to the Setting icon and have a look at the available settings. See below.

Within the Settings area you can choose or create a new page template. Set the size background image etc and create a customized page for your company.

But on the 3D and Advanced tab you have more technical settings.

Once you have set up your setting (which is optional) you can export your model and 2D view. For this exercise I’ll export one of each. Click on the PDF Export on the Add-Ins Tab -> SimLab PDF Exporter

You will be introduced to an Export screen asking you to select one or multiple views. Click the Select None option at the bottom and select the view to export. I selected the Approach 3D View and a 2D site plan.

Click Ok and name the file. Processing will happen and the PDF file will be created. Open the PDF file is it is not opened already.

You will see a screen like below and you can use the tools on the left to navigate the model.

A nice feature is to add a cross section to the model. Use the tool on the right of the toolbar to initiate the cross section.

Now go back to the Cross Section Properties and edit the following three settings. First turn off the Show cutting Plane option. Also edit the Offset slider and have a look at the result. You can also edit the Cut Plane’s Alignment as shown.

You can also look at individual item’s properties by enabling the Tree Mode.

Another great feature is you can measure in 3D.

I used the snaps to measure the width of the table.

Like with multi page Pdf files you can enable the page thumbnails and then click on the thumbnail to view other pages if any.
