Revit 2017 – Materials Error

Recently I ran into an error on the material browser on some of our training workstations. For some reason the material textures were not being read. This can be seen by the warning signs in the picture below.


I tried repairing the software, and when that failed, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling – to no avail. Although I installed from the same installation media, with the same build, and the same add-ins, my own laptop did not exhibit the same symptoms. If you find you Revit 2017 misbehaving in the same manner, here follows a method by which you can still have access to the relevant materials images. I would also appreciate it if you could let me know if you ran into this problem.

A desperate user may quickly browse to a particular image for the appearance, but clearly this is impractical if many materials are affected. A workaround is to set the directory as an Additional Render Appearance Path within Options <Click Green Arrow>

Set the path to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Materials\Textures\1\Mats” The materials to the Autodesk materials are saved in here. If you are in the habit of taking your own pictures to represent materials you can set another path to that directory as well.


Now this path gets written to the Revit.ini file. To see the file:

Another option would have been to write the path to the Revit.ini file directly. Here is an article describing how to do this:
